Silkie — The Sweetheart of the Chicken World

The Silkie is one of the most recognizable and adored chicken breeds on the planet. With their soft, fluffy plumage that feels more like fur than feathers, gentle personalities, and striking features like black skin and turquoise earlobes, Silkies bring charm and whimsy to every flock. Their friendly nature makes them especially popular with families, small farms, and anyone who wants a truly delightful companion bird.

Silkies are more than just cute—they’re calm, reliable brooders and excellent mothers, making them a favorite among breeders and hobbyists alike.

 

This version is a specialty hybrid, thoughtfully bred to pair the silky-soft feathers and gentle temperament Silkies are famous for with the unique green egg color* prized by egg enthusiasts. Our group is mixed bearded and non‑bearded and will hatch in a range of blue to splash.  Some will have head crests while others will be smooth headed. All will have the quintessential silkie combination of silky plumage and loving docile temperament.

*As this is a hybrid not always breeding true, a small number of offspring will still lay cream color eggs.  We are working to bring homozygous blue egg gene into our group so all are guaranteed to lay green eggs.

  • Type: Hybrid breed

  • Egg Production: 100–120 small light green to turquoise, or cream* colored eggs per year

  • Temperament: Exceptionally gentle, calm, and social

  • Appearance: Fluffy “fur‑like” feathers, black skin, dark bones, turquoise earlobes

  • Comb Type: Walnut comb

  • Adult Weight:  Larger than bantam, but on the small side - typically 1.25–1.7 kg

  • Climate Tolerance: Prefer mild climates; feathers offer less water resistance
